CNN adapts the second screen to TV news

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

Have you ever used a second screen while watching TV? Second screens are what happens when you combine a shrinking attention span with a ravenous appetite for real-time information.

Media companies use them to allow sports fans to follow and contribute to play-by-play dissection of the game they’re watching, or to allow reality TV addicts to join a national conversation with fellow fans while their favourite shows are being broadcast. But one as-yet neglected area is TV news, which tends to be a one-way flow of content.

CNN wanted to make their readers a part of their live coverage of the Presidential debates. So they ran a liveblog on their politics white label to collect all their coverage, and paired it with with a smaller liveblog that was purely for reader comments. That meant the comment moderators could approve a lot more questions without interrupting the coverage CNN’s editorial team was producing. Readers could consume both coverage and comments, or just the coverage. (Want to do something similar? Use Scribble’s custom Top HTML — via your templates page — to add any custom content to your event: include a map, an ad, a liveblog for comments a la CNN, or any other HTML elements or widgets you can dream up).

In an interview with Lost Remote, Senior Digital Producer CNN/USA Steve Krakauer explained the role live coverage played in their editorial strategy. Lost Remove’s Natan Edelsburg writes:

“[Krakauer explained why it was important for] his to his team to innovate the second screen experience for TV news. ‘On the news side,’ he described that second screen innovation, ‘hasn’t happened as quickly and we wanted to own that space.’

“He also described how important it is for them to curate the social conversation from the right influencers, not just CNN influencers. ‘We will bring in tweets from Michael Moore, Glenn Beck… it was CNN centered but not CNN exclusive,’ he explained.”

How to liveblog interactive electoral face-offs

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

Have you ever thought about liveblogging a pre-electoral show-down of the most prominent politicians involved in the upcoming elections?

How about getting them answering the concerns of real people in real time? Liveblogs can bring otherwise-unreachable-politicians down to earth and spare one hour of their time to meet the citizens – whether they’re in their office or an airport lounge.

Yesterday, Brussels-based newspaper La Libre - one of the main players in Belgium’s fragmented media landscape – showed the world yet another way liveblogging can be brilliantly applied to the cause of political reporting. Last week, news behemoth CNN and news startup Watchdog.org both live fact-checked the first U.S. Presidential Debate.

Our platform has been used to engage audiences in various ways and we’re excited to announce that CNN’s morning show Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien will be using ScribbleLive to add an interactive real-time component to their program.

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012 was the first time Starting Point used our livebloging platform.

“Today we’re trying something new: We’re working with Scribble Live to bring you a real-time live blog during Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien. See the form below to sign in – and you don’t have to create an account to participate.” – CNN

Their goal was to engage the show’s viewers and encourage discussion around the various topics covered. We think that CNN’s Starting Point team did a wonderful job with their liveblog, they used pools, webcam comments, and tweets to build a rich real-time conversation.

Apple’s WWDC Keynote: A Live Blogging and LiveSyndication Success

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

We are very pleased that yesterday’s WWDC Apple Keynote event was a success for all of our clients that live blogged it. As usual, the world’s top tech blogs used our platform to cover Tim Cook’s exclusive presentation. There’s no event like an Apple event: they’re sold out within minutes and are not streamed live. This allowed liveblogs to take center stage in delivering the exclusive content to the masses.

In addition to providing a platform to blogs like Mashable, CNET, AppleInsider and The Next Web, we also had two top tech sites utilize our LiveSyndication technology to distribute their live coverage to over 20 different ScribbleLive clients. Each client had the ability to pull in original content, social updates and reader comments onto their own site.  Apple event content is very sought after and through our syndication marketplace many news organizations were able to deliver the exciting updates to their readers in real-time.

We look forward to September, when Apple’s next event is scheduled and, as usual, a big announcement is expected.  We’ll be there to support the world’s best tech websites and top news organizations in providing high quality, real-time content to their viewers.
